The Debate Is On… As If It Were Ever Off

I guess the idea of actually going to Washington and trying to work the banking industry problems out was too much for Senator McCain, and he decided to go back to campaigning, after all.

“He is optimistic that there has been significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement,” the campaign’s statement said. Earlier in the week, McCain said he would delay the debate “until we have taken action to address this crisis.”

Yes, yes, I know, he never actually stopped campaigning when he announced his suspended campaign, it was just another stunt designed to jumpstart the dead battery that is his campaign.  I don’t think it worked, though, as journalists seem to be wise to him now.

In other news, the venal and corrupt “reformer,” Sarah Palin, apparently took over $25,000 in gifts from various organizations, many of which she accepted after she pushed through an ethics reform package in the state legislature.

Records show that 23 of the gifts were offered during Palin’s early months in office, when she was pushing the legislature to address a state corruption scandal by passing a package of ethics reforms. She accepted 18 gifts after the law passed in July 2007. Among other provisions, the law forbade executive branch officials from taking gifts from lobbyists or from interests with pending state business.

Hmm, what else?  How about this?  Kathleen Parker, once one of Palin’s biggest supporters, now thinks it’s time for Palin to go:

If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself.

If Palin were a man, we’d all be guffawing, just as we do every time Joe Biden tickles the back of his throat with his toes. But because she’s a woman — and the first ever on a Republican presidential ticket — we are reluctant to say what is painfully true.

What to do?

McCain can’t repudiate his choice for running mate. He not only risks the wrath of the GOP’s unforgiving base, but he invites others to second-guess his executive decision-making ability. Barack Obama faces the same problem with Biden.

Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she loves. She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first.

Do it for your country.
